lyrics
we came down river together
we started in the spring
we came down river together
i play strings and my friend, he sings
i fell in love on the river
had my mother's guitar,
to play behind that voice of his
and two bottles of the finest velvet fire
i had ever tasted
my baby swore he sung sweeter wasted
now i pour the remainder
of the one he didn't take
for the lips of the young men
who try to take his place
and they can distract me momentarily
but i won't remember their names
just a kiss traced with whiskey
i miss that warm breath twisted in melody
i buzz-cut his hair when he asked me
ran my hand over his delicate, bristly head.
felt light upon my chest, when he said
"there's a weight on my mind, and for now, what's best,
is for me to purposely tread into loneliness."
so i wrote a few verses of my own
to a chorus we sang somewhere along the road
sung it drunkenly to strangers, sung it til i'd re-arranged it
but nothing is set in stone
the melody you already know
so someday i'll be drifting
i'll catch you washing your clothes
your hair grown long again
wet at the ends and brushing stones
eyes with that same glow like
emerald buried in grey snow
will i get lost in them again?
might you say no?
